| DHA is an essential omega-3 fatty acid necessary from proper brain, eye and nerve development, straight from the in utero period to adulthood. However, pregnant and breastfeeding women must pay attention to their fish intake due to potential heavy metals contamination. These dietary restrictions may prevent these women from achieving the 300mg daily recommended intake for DHA for the normal development of the fetus and the breastfed infant. Clinical studies have shown that infants whose mother has consumed omega 3 supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding had a high intellectual quotient and a better visual acuity, among others. Studies have even shown that omega-3 reduce the risk of post-partum depression and the risk of premature birth in high-risk pregnancies. |
