- How long are your products still good after the expiry date?
The expiry date of our products is written besides the lot number on the label and is preceded by the letters EXP. According to our stability tests, our products preserve their efficacy and their quality until that date. If the expiry date has passed, the product does not suddenly become bad for your health. We are simply not able to guarantee the same efficacy as before the expiry date. Nonetheless, in general, our stability tests are showing that the freshness of the majority of our products is maintained up to about one year after this expiry date. For our meal replacement Nutriforme bars, they are safe to eat for about 6 months after the expiry date. However, the bars can become harder to chew and the chocolate may start to turn white. In any case, if you have questions about this topic, do not hesitate to contact our expert team at1-800-781-7723 or at info@santenaturelle.ca.

- In the Women’s Health category, I see two cranberry products. What is the difference between them?
Indeed, we carry 2 slightly different cranberry products in the Women’s Health Category. The first product offers 270 mg of cranberries, under a 10 to 1 concentrate, meaning that each capsule brings the equivalent of 2,700 mg of fresh cranberries, in a bottle size of 100 capsules. Our second cranberry product is labelled as an «Extra Strength» and offers 250mg of cranberries, under a strong concentrate of 34 to 1, meaning that each capsule brings the equivalent of 8,500mg of fresh cranberries, in a bottle size of 100 capsules. Our regular 270mg cranberry product is thus recommended for the day-to-day prevention of urinary tract infections or as a general antioxidant, whereas our extra strength product can be used to prevent recurrent urinary tract infections, when the first symptoms of a urinary tract infection appear or shortly following a treatment for a urinary tract infection to avoid its recurrence.
- I have noticed a NPN number now appears on my product labels. What does it mean and is it important ?
Since 2004, Health Canada has established one of the most stringent regulations in the world around natural health products. Once Health Canada has evaluated the quality, the safety and the efficacy of a product, a Natural Product Number (NPN) is issued to the products that have successfully met all the requirements of Health Canada. So far, A.G. Adrien Gagnon has obtained almost every of its NPN. In fact, our products already met the strictest criteria, well before Health Canada’s regulations. Our products have always been synonym of quality and efficacy, and we keep on matching the highest industry standards.
- Does it mean that a product without an NPN on its label is not safe or not effective?
The complete quality, safety and efficacy evaluation for each natural health product sold in Canada is a very long process for Health Canada. Therefore, during their evaluation, Health Canada allows products that are safe to be sold under an Exemption Number (EN), while waiting for their final NPN. That is why an NPN does not appear on every of our labels. Another reason for not finding an NPN on the label may simply be that the labels have not been updated with their NPN number. Thus, a seemingly non-NPN product (no NPN on the label) may well have received its NPN already from Health Canada, and this number will appear on the future product batches.
- Where may I purchase AG Adrien Gagnon’s products?
In Quebec, our products are mainly sold in pharmacies mass market stores. We also enjoy a great international distribution. To learn in which countries our products are available and for the distributor to contact, visit:

- My glucosamine tablets have changed colour, are they still good?
By popular demand, we have added a uniform coating on our glucosamine tablets. Since the colour of glucosamine may vary depending on the available fishery, on the season of fishery or on the shrimp’s species, we have decided to standardized the appearance of our glucosamine tablets with the addition of a slight caramel coating. This strategy will ensure that in the future, our glucosamine products will always be of the same colour from one production batch to the next and you will not have to worry anymore about the colour variation between two glucosamine bottles.
- Do you products contain Gluten ?
The vast majority of our products do not contain gluten. When necessary, we prefer to use maltodextrin, a flour that comes from corn and which is thus gluten-free and totally safe for people with gluten intolerance. The products that contain or may contain gluten are:
- our Nutriforme meal replacement bars, with the exception of the Peanut and Chocolate brownie flavours;
- our Wheat Germ Oil;
- our Brewer’s Yeast;
- and our Magnesium 300mg in capsule, because it contains brewer’s yeast
If you have questions about other allergens, do not hesitate to contact us. We will be pleased to provide you with the information you need.

- Does your probiotic products contain lactose ?
We can’t confirm the absolute absence of lactose in our probiotic products, however its presence (if there is) would be at trace levels. Furthermore, since probiotics help digest lactose, intolerant people should actually see a beneficial effect in taking probiotics, that is, a better tolerance to lactose. Thus, Probiotics can help contol symptoms in case of accidental ingestion of lactose.
« Take note: all of our probiotic products have been in contact with dairy and soya products, so people allergic to these ingredients should be careful.
- What is the source of the gelatin in your products ?
All of our hard capsule products are made of bovine gelatin (Feminex line, our herbals, our glucosamine, etc.). Most of our softgel products (soft gelatin capsule) are made of porcine gelatin (Omega-3, Wheat Germ Oil, Ultra Lecithin, etc.), but they are currently being transferred to bovine gelatin. Our probiotics are made of vegetable gelatine.
- Is it possible to open the capsule or the softgel of your products and if yes, does it affect the quality of the treatment ?
All of our products, capsules or softgels, can be opened and their content mixed with cold beverages or food. The capsule or softgel are used uniquely as coating for the active ingredients; you then don’t lose any active ingredients when opening them. However, we don’t recommend mixing the content of the capsule to a hot beverage or food for stability reasons, similarly, perform the mixture just before taking it, not a long time in advance.
- How should I take probiotic products when taking antibiotics ?
It is strongly recommended to take probiotics when going under antibiotic treatment. No matter if it’s for 3 days or 10 days, probiotics have a positive effect on the intestinal flora to replace the good bacterias killed by the antibiotics. It should however be taken separately from the antibiotics, meaning a few hours apart so that the probiotics have a chance to colonise the intestinal flora instead of being destroyed as well by the antibiotics. For example, if you take antibiotics every 6 hours, it would be recommended to take probiotics between each intake of antibiotics, so 3 hours after, therefore 3 hours before the next intake of antibiotics.
- Does your glucosamine products contains sodium ?
All of our glucosamine products are sodium-free. You will therefore see the mention « sodium free » on our labels. However, people suffering from hypertension, may want to consider the potassium content of our product, or about 85mg per 500mg capsule of glucosamine.
- Can I take glucosamine if I have diabetes?
There is no risk to take glucosamine if you are diabetic, since glucosamine has no impact on blood glucose level. The « glucose» portion in glucosamine cannot be used as a glucose source in the body since the body cannot separate glucosamine in 2 different molecules (glucose and amine). The body must use glucosamine entirely without dividing it, it is then impossible for it to represent a source of glucose for the body. The important thing to known is that certain glucose meters (glucometers) react to glucosamine, thus falsifying the results but without affecting actual the blood sugar level. Thus, only the reading of the glucometer is false as it seems to give an elevated result, but your real level of blood glucose is in fact lower. Besides, Health Canada recognises the security of glucosamine for diabetic people.
- Can I take glucosamine if I am allergic to seafood ?
Absolutely. Glucosamine comes from the outer shell of shellfish and for a long time people allergic to shellfish believed that they couldn’t take glucosamine. Since the protein (the principal allergen) is absent from our glucosamine products, allergic people can take glucosamine without any concerns. Besides, Health Canada has no warnings on glucosamine for people allergic to seafood.
- Should I tell my doctor or my pharmacist if I take natural products ?
Absolutely ! To your doctor, your pharmacist or your naturopath, it is essential to lists all medications (with or without prescription) and natural products you are taking on a regular basis or as needed. This way, you will avoid problems related to interactions or contraindications between certain medication and natural products.
